How to read a text

Tap a Chinese word to open its card, then choose the whole sentence to study it in context. Pinyin, translation and audio help you read at your own level. A familiar word is not necessarily mastered: the text summary shows how much of its vocabulary is already in your dictionary.

Words and sentences

The word card shows its pronunciation and meaning. If Tomyo has a dictionary entry for the word, you can add it to your own dictionary. Opening the card alone does not add it.

The sentence view has the Chinese text, pinyin, a translation and its own audio. It helps you understand what the word does in that sentence. News and the daily text have the same reading controls.

Reading settings

Show pinyin and translation when you need them. Text size and typeface change the main text to make it easier to read. Full-text audio highlights words as they are spoken; you can replay a sentence separately.

What counts as practice

Listening to the full text increases its practice count. It does not replace an answer on a vocabulary card or move words automatically to another stage. Add a word to your dictionary to include it in regular reviews.

What to do if…

Most words are familiar, but the text is still difficult

The summary checks whether words are in your dictionary, not whether you know every construction or meaning. Open the whole sentence and compare its translation with the individual words.

The translation or audio is not ready yet

Translation and the first audio recording may be prepared separately. Wait for the result and tap again if the browser asks you to start the recording once more. If the error persists, tell support which material you opened.
