Chrome extension

The Tomyo extension helps you read Chinese on ordinary web pages: hover over a word for pinyin and a translation, then save it. You can collect words without an account and connect Tomyo later to add them to your dictionary. The extension is currently in a pilot and is installed from a folder; it is not yet published in the Chrome Web Store.

Reading a page

After installation, open the extension and enable reading on the current page. The tooltip shows dictionary meanings, pinyin, available parts of speech and readings. Choose the reading you need before saving. A word meaning is not a translation of the whole sentence.

You can allow automatic activation on a chosen site. Chrome asks for permission for that site. Reading is unavailable on browser system pages or where Chrome blocks extensions. This version does not read text inside images or PDFs.

Saved words and your account

Without signing in, words are stored in this browser with their sentence and source link. To connect an account, sign in or register on the Tomyo page and confirm the connection. You can transfer the words you have already collected.

Once connected, newly saved words are sent to your dictionary automatically. If the connection fails, they wait for sync. The sentence and source remain local extension context; they do not automatically become a personal example on the word card.

Offline and across devices

Once the dictionary is downloaded, tooltips and local saving work offline. Connecting an account, syncing and first loading a pronunciation recording require a connection. Previously played recordings may be available from the cache.

The extension is separate from the iOS and Android apps. Synced words appear in your shared account, while the local list and its sources belong to the browser where you collected them.

What to do if…

A word has no tooltip

Check that reading is enabled and the dictionary has downloaded. The first version supports ordinary page text and simplified characters; a rare word may be missing from the dictionary.

I saved a word, but it is missing from Tomyo

Check the connected account and sync status in the extension. Without a connection to an account, the word stays in the browser. After a network error, restore the connection and retry syncing.
