Missed days

Nothing is lost. Word progress is not reset; your streak is the only thing that genuinely breaks. In fact, if you recall a word correctly after a break, Tomyo credits all the time that actually passed: since the word survived longer than planned, the next gap grows even wider.

Being overdue is information, not a penalty

When a word arrives late and you still recall it, that is proof it holds in memory longer than Tomyo assumed. Such an answer is worth more than a review done on time, and the gap to the next encounter grows based on the time that really passed rather than the time that was scheduled.

If the word would not come, it simply returns more often. That is the ordinary stage drop — the same one that happens after a mistake with no break involved.

What the first session after a pause looks like

Reviews accumulated while you were away queue up, and sessions go to them for a while: backlog first, new material after. Sessions may run longer than usual so the queue clears faster.

You do not need to clear it all at once, and it does not help. A few sessions in a row handle a queue better than one very long session you never want to repeat.

After a long break

Some words will honestly fall back to lower stages — that is not lost progress but sharper progress: Tomyo has learned what actually faded and will bring those words round more often. Everything still in memory keeps its stage.
