Cultural hint
A passport is always needed at hotels in China. Some hotels may also ask for a deposit 押金 (yājīn - “deposit”).
If you are on a business trip and need an official document for reimbursement, ask for 发票 (fāpiào - “official receipt / invoice”). If the key card does not open the door, 房卡开不了门 (fángkǎ kāi bù liǎo mén - “the room key card will not open the door”) is clearer than just saying “it does not work.”
