Rule structure

罢了 (bàle) limits a statement: “merely, that’s all”. 也罢 (yě bà) accepts an option, sometimes with resignation, “so be it”; it can occur once or after several alternatives. 矣 (yǐ) is a classical or literary final particle, often marking a new or already reached state: 悔之晚矣 (huǐ zhī wǎn yǐ), “it’s too late for regrets”. The three forms have different functions.

Examples

我只是随便问问罢了,你不去也罢。

Wǒ zhǐshì suíbiàn wènwen bàle, nǐ bú qù yě bà.

I was just asking, that's all; if you don't go, fine.
