Rule structure

于 (yú) is a formal preposition introducing the time or place of an action. It can come before the predicate, as in the main example, or after certain verbs: 出生于北京 (chū shēng yú běi jīng) (chūshēng yú Běijīng), “be born in Beijing”, and 位于市中心 (wèiyú shì zhōngxīn), “be located in the city center”. The postverbal position depends on the combination and is not available with every verb. In conversation, a construction with 在 (zài) is often preferred.
