A constructional approach to Chinese grammar: why patterns are remembered better than abstract rules

In Chinese learning materials, grammar is traditionally presented as a set of rules: "the particle 了 indicates completed action," "the 把 construction is used when an object is moved or changed," "the copula 是 doesn't combine with adjectives, except for emphasis." A learner memorizes the formulation, successfully reproduces it in class, then discovers a gap a few weeks later: the rule exists in memory, but it doesn't trigger in spontaneous speech. This gap between declarative knowledge of a rule and productive use has long been described in second language acquisition literature and represents one of the central problems in Chinese teaching methodology.

Construction grammar and usage-based approaches

An alternative framework is offered by construction grammar—a movement in cognitive linguistics developed in the work of Adele Goldberg, William Croft, Michael Tomasello, and other researchers. In this framework, grammatical knowledge isn't rigidly divided into "lexicon" and "rules." Instead, language is described as a network of constructions—stable form-meaning pairs of varying degrees of abstraction: from individual morphemes and words to partially filled patterns ("the more X, the more Y") and fully abstract syntactic schemas.

A related approach—usage-based theory (Ellis, Bybee)—adds the thesis that grammatical knowledge forms based on accumulated experience using language. Frequency, context, and concrete exemplars play the primary role, while abstract generalizations emerge as a result of statistical analysis of this experience by the brain. The rules that linguists write in textbooks are attempts to explicitly describe patterns that native speakers acquired implicitly from thousands of encounters with concrete examples.

Why Chinese is particularly suited to constructional description

Chinese is predominantly an isolating language: morphology is minimal, grammatical meanings are expressed primarily through word order, function words, and stable syntactic patterns. This means that a significant portion of what textbooks call "Chinese grammar rules" is essentially descriptions of constructions—stable syntactic frameworks with fixed elements and variable slots.

Take the construction: 我把书放在桌子上 (wǒ bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng—"I put the book on the table"). A textbook might describe it through four rules: "把 comes before the direct object," "the verb requires a resultative or directional complement," "the object must be definite," "negation 不/没 comes before 把." In the constructional framework, this is simply the pattern [Subj + 把 + Obj + V + Complement] with the meaning of "disposal"—the subject's action on an object with a specific result. A learner who has memorized five or six concrete sentences with 把 and the pattern's meaning uses it in speech more easily than one who remembers four rules and tries to sequentially apply them while producing the phrase.

Concrete examples of constructions

The "越…越…" construction. Examples: 越多越好 (yuè duō yuè hǎo—"the more the better"), 越来越冷 (yuè lái yuè lěng—"getting colder and colder"). The pattern [越 X 越 Y] links change in feature X with change in feature Y. Describing this with rules is complex—the construction has peculiarities (for example, the form 越来越 meaning "more and more" works differently from the general schema and requires an adjective or state verb). Remembering it as two related patterns with typical examples is noticeably simpler.

The "一…就…" construction. Example: 我一回家就睡觉 (wǒ yī huí jiā jiù shuìjiào—"as soon as I get home, I go to sleep"). The pattern [一 V₁ 就 V₂] means "as soon as V₁ happens, V₂ immediately follows." The rule in this case boils down to describing the slots and meaning of the pattern—which is essentially the definition of a construction.

The "连…都/也" construction. Example: 连孩子都知道 (lián háizi dōu zhīdào—"even a child knows this"). The pattern [连 X 都/也 Y] highlights element X as unexpected or extreme in the context of statement Y. Without familiarity with concrete examples, applying the abstract description of "highlighting meaning" is nearly impossible—the learner doesn't understand when to choose this construction at all.

The 是…的 construction. Example: 我是昨天来的 (wǒ shì zuótiān lái de—"I came yesterday" [emphasis on when]). This is a so-called cleft construction that emphasizes one element of an already known action. Textbooks often confuse it with the regular copula 是—a typical case where rules mislead, while patterns with examples distinguish two similar forms.

Resultative verb constructions. Example: 听懂 (tīng dǒng—"hear and understand"), 看完 (kàn wán—"finish reading"), 找到 (zhǎo dào—"find"). This is the pattern [V₁ + V₂/Adj] where the second element describes the result of the first. Describing this class purely through rules is nearly impossible: combinations are fixed, many have idiomatic meanings, and the number of productive pairs runs into the hundreds. A learner who acquires them as separate constructions with concrete examples progresses faster than one trying to derive combinations from a general rule.

The cognitive mechanics

Why are patterns remembered more reliably than rules? Several mechanisms described in cognitive science are at work here. The first is chunking: the brain stores frequently encountered sequences as unified units rather than as sets of elements that need to be assembled anew each time. The construction 越来越 is remembered as one chunk, not as a combination of three independent decisions made on the fly.

The second mechanism is the frequency effect: the more often a concrete example is encountered, the more accessible it becomes in memory. This means that encountering the 把 construction in ten different contexts helps a learner remember it more solidly than reading one rule ten times. Implicit acquisition through repeated encounters in meaningful contexts relies on the same general mechanism as a child's language acquisition—with the caveat that adults learn more slowly and with less input.

The third mechanism is exemplar memory: new situations are recognized by analogy with already familiar examples. A learner who hears a new sentence with 把 recognizes the pattern not by checking against a rule, but through similarity with already known examples.

Where rules are still needed

It would be oversimplification to claim that explicit rules are useless. Second language acquisition literature (DeKeyser, R. Ellis, and others) shows that for adult learners, especially with limited input, explicit grammar description accelerates acquisition of certain types of constructions—particularly those where contrasts are difficult to derive from examples without hints. For Chinese, this includes, for example, subtle distinctions between aspect markers 了, 过, and 着 in similar contexts: purely exemplar familiarity is often insufficient, and explicit rules help notice contrasts and direct attention.

The practical conclusion is therefore not "rules aren't needed," but rather: rules are useful as commentary on patterns, not as replacements for them. First—concrete examples of the construction in meaningful contexts, then brief explicit description to reinforce contrasts, then more examples again. This scheme aligns with both the constructional framework and empirical data on the role of explicit instruction in second language acquisition.

What this means for practice

Several practical solutions for independent Chinese study follow from the constructional approach. Flashcards in spaced repetition systems are more logically built around constructions rather than individual rules: on one side—a pattern with a missing slot and context, on the other—typical completion and brief commentary on meaning. Sentence mining—the practice of collecting authentic sentences from real sources—works on the same principle: the learner accumulates examples of constructions in context rather than lists of isolated words.

The reverse habit is also useful: when encountering an unfamiliar grammatical structure, don't rush to find a rule, but first collect four or five examples of its usage from texts or dialogues. Often after this, the rule becomes unnecessary—the pattern is recognized directly, and the process of collecting examples embeds the structure in memory more reliably than memorizing formulations.
